Background
Human sensory experience Is one of my favorite topics to explore in my design practice. As smells have a stronger link to memory and emotion than other senses. I wonder how it's possible to use smells as the main character and work along with other sensory experiences to tell stories. I came up with a proposal for a pop-up perfume store / exhibition to fulfill this idea.

Design an exhibition using smells, spatial configurations, sounds, and visuals to tell stories
BRAND STORY
As the design exercise starting point, I chose the perfume brand Diptyque and 3 perfumes from the product line: L’Ombre dans l’Eau, Eau de Minthé, Tam Dao to develop the design concept. Those perfume created from stories:

-
L’Ombre dans l’Eau tells the story of daydreams, a calm river, a summer slumber under a weeping willow...
-
Eau de Minthé is inspired by a Greek myth, Eau de Minthé reinvents an
emblematic perfumery accord, fougère, drawing on the scent of mint. -
Tam Dao comes from the memory from the holy forests of Indochina, and the
velvety, milky scent of sandalwood burned in temples.

These stories allow me to visualize the store experience.

USER JOURNEY
I mapped out users' experience and engagement opportunities in the store, as well as experience in the "smell rooms" based on each perfume's smells and stories.

I wanted to recreate the travel and discovery experience in the pop-up, curate and guide customers through different smells. There will be a display of their products outside of the explore room, letting customers purchase them.

RESEARCH, DESIGN & MODELING
After having a confident idea of the user flow, I made image boards to collect design inspiration.

I started by looking at different floor plans that can bring experience in sequence: different shapes, disconnected or connected.

Styles of rooms and interactions.
Then, I sketched out each smell rooms experience.

Finally, I created the floor plan, made both digital and physical models to experiment with the ideas.
